>> catherine: now at five -- the bay area is bracing for icy temperatures. you're looking at snow on mount hamilton in the south bay that fell overnight. people have been driving up to the lick observatory to see it. freeze warnings are set to take effect in a matter of hours. here's a live look at conditions in plesanton where it's expected to dip into the twenties. and - the view from our mt. tam camera in the north bay. good evening, i'm catherine heenan. i'm here in the weather center with jacqueline. she's been tracking this cold weather. >> jacqueline: on it is going to be at a cold. if you've been outside already it is already in the 40's with the wind gusting making it feel even colder. upper 40's and/low 50s right now. 48 novato 49 in pleasanton we are still seeing some gusting winds up 28 m.p.h. at half moon bay. 18 mph in santa rosa. these wind gusts are making it feel much colder but the wind has to

die down, overnight for the temperatures to really drop off. it looks like the well. widespread 20' the north bay, 2n concord, pleasanton, livermore. and in the south bay, concord, 30's through oakland. 34 degrees in half moon bay. frost advisories have been issued. we will talk about more how that will last coming up. >> catherine: one doctor we talked to says the cold weather makes it easier for the flu to spread. tonight - the first reports of flu deaths in california this year.. we'll have a look at the outbreak spreading across the country -- later in the newscast. >> but first - we're following developing news out of central california. a student walks into a school classroom in kern county.and shoots at two students.critically injuring one.and missing the other. it happened this morning at taft union high school.which is about 35 miles south-west of

bakersfield. just off interstate 5. this is a very rural town.the school actually has an armed guard.but the guard was not at the school today because he was snowed in. the 16-year old shooting suspect also hit a teacher in the head with a pellet from the 12-guague shotgun he used. that teacher was not seriously injured.and along with a campus counselor the teacher helped convince the shooter to put the gun down. tonight the shooter is in polce custody. right after the shooting, terrified parents rushed to the school.you can see how upset come appear. one mother says her daughter was huddled in a closet.called 9-11, then called her mom. >> i could not even understand her when she was trying to talk to me she said just to get here because there is blood everywhere. she was hysterical. >> reporter: some parents

and studets say the shooter targeted the two students at which he shot. they also say the shooter had a hit list last year.of people he wanted to kill.and was expelled from the school. but he was apparently allowed back in this year. we'll comtinue following-- continue.. that story.and this comes on the same day that vice president joe biden met with a national rifle association official to discuss ways to reduce gun violence in america. what major gun change is most likely.at 5:30. >> catherine: a developing story tonight. the search for victims of the speed freak killers -- wesley shermantine and loren herzog. they carried out a drug- fueled killing spree in the 80's and 90's. shermantine has led authorities to what he says are the burial sites of victims. last year - the remains of at least 3 people were found in an abandoned well. now the f.b.i has taken over and they're searching a new well. kron-4's j-r stone is here with the story.

the this is a link to wesleyan shermantine.. with a major setback the bottom of the well has been reached. at 200 ft. below the surface that is where they have not found any human remains. with to wondered feet deep is a huge blow to the fbi. 2 1/3 feet deep, they thought that this was only 50 ft. deep. now, they've already gone 200 ft. deep. there is now, water at the bottom of the wealth that has to be drained. to trade that, that-water at the bottom. but more drain efforts is going to even be more expensive. but it is likely going to go up with this well is four times deeper than they are rigidly in thought. once they clear that out they can see what

bridge tower. the support beams compromised and you can see the cargo ship is scraped with that piece of fender. officials say that the fender on the tower did exactly what was supposed to do. the bridge is is structurally sound and the drivers for never in any danger. >> we are getting a first look of the man that was dousing his girlfriend with gasoline and setting her on fire. fire. 22-year-old dexter oliver didn't say much in a san francisco courtroom today. other than indicating he doesn't have the money for an attorney. he's been charged with 11 felonies including attempted murder, assault and torture. he's accused of filling two bottles with gasoline - and throwing it on his girlfriend after a fight over clothes at a laundromat. bail has been set for 10 million dollars. >> a convicted sex ofender and murderer has turned himself into vallejo police for

the murder of his 90-year- old mother. investigators say that on wednesday - 70-year-old dennis stanworth called 911 claiming to have killed his mothernellie stanworth police arrived at his home on marshfield road. and found the woman's body - and arrested her son.it's not clear yet exactly when the woman died. but two of her friends say dennis told them she died weeks ago >> he was going in his house and i just yelled and i said howl is nellie? because i thought that she was okay. and i yelled how is millie and he said that she passed away last week. and she had a military burial that is all that he said. and that makes me sick. my wife cannot get over it is very upset. we both are, really. she was really nice to us. we had good relationships with her shores really nice,

the nicest lady i've known for a long time. she was in perfect health there was nothing wrong she could of little least five, six years another issue kenaf. i wished she would. i wish-- she could have -- and i have no idea why anybody would want to do that let alone"let alone her son" >> catherine: stanworth's criminal history includes rape and murder. coming up at 6 - more on his background. >> catherine: the caiman found guarding 34 pounds of marijuana at a castro valley home tuesday - has died. the animal - which resembles an alligator - was called "mr. teeth" -- and his owner got him in 1996. authorities took him to the oakland zoo --but staff members say he was critically ill. he was put in quarantine after being examined -- and died overnight. alameda county sheriff's deputies found 'mr. teeth' when they were doing a probation check at the home. his owner has been arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana for sale.

>> catherine: chances are - you either know someone sick with flu or you have it yourself. much of the nation is gripped in an outbreak. now - doctors are beginning to see indications that a flu outbreak is taking hold here. two people have died in the sacramento area. the c-d-c expects that 50- thousand flu deaths are possible this season. kron 4's justine waldman shows us how you can track the path of the virus.. none are seeing an increase in flu cases or shortages of vaccines. the c-d-c will issue an update on the flu situation friday. phfft >> catherine: a fiery crash sent up plumes of smoke and forced the shut-down of parts of two highways in vallejo for hours. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc-7 news. kron four's maureen kelly tells us what happened when a big rig went off an overpass. >> reporter: this is all that is left of the trailer the big rig was towingnow charred and shattered.being pulled away by a tow truck. the cab of the trucksmashed and in pieces where it landed. this all started with an accident at 6:40 am between the big rig and this pick up you see hereon the elevated portion of westbound 37 near the on ramp from hwy 29 .you can see the tire tracks on the road that show how the big rig veered off and went over the side. falling 50 feet to this gully next to the northbound lanes of highway 29. 3 bystanders including an off duty paramedic saw big

rig plunge over the side and rushed to helpone carrying a fire extinguisher because the tractor trailer had already caught fire. bite >> when they got to the cab of the truck they found that the driver was upside down in a tangled in his seat belt. he was able to get out, and transport to kaiser permanente in in vallejo. >> reporter: but it was no use.the driver of the ace hardware truck died of his injuries. he's been identifed as 43 year old william ballard of roseville. donna gillies felt the crash from her home a quarter mile away. because it was unclear what the burning trailer was hauling. the solano county haz mat team was called in to put out the blaze. a portion west bound 37 was closed for three hours.reopened after crews inspected what was determined to be minor damage done to the overpass. northbound 29 at marine world parkway was closed unitl around 12 noon.during the investigation of the fatal crash.and the clean up. maureen kelly kron4 news. >> catherine: caltrans crews closed off one northbound lane of 880 today.after a big rig hit a highway sign on an overpass in hayward. it happened around noon - near the tennyson road exit

what governor brown is saying. with a budget surplus. >> yes, with years of budget cutbacks we have a rebounding economy and proposition 30. there is going to be more money in the coffers but this proposal could provide significant changes on fund distribution. k-12 education will increase by two. $7,000,000,000.1820088854 by the year 2017. not only with services, programs but additional teachers and staff. they also want more local control to get away with the dedicated funds for certain issues and let local school districts decide how they want their money spent. when the most controversial is funding would not be evenly distributed. over

but total universal background checks including private sales. >> reporter: something colorado's governor supports. >> why don't we have universal background checks all gun sales? >> reporter: the national rifle association is meeting with the taskforce today. and while the group opposes tougher gun control laws, it wants more armed guards in schools. in virginia which saw the deadliest school shooting in the nation's history - a new quinnipiac university poll shows. 66% of voters say they support the idea of placing an armed police officer in every school, 29 percent opposed the idea. but at the federal level, the majority of virginia voters support a national ban on assault weapons by a margin of 58% to 39%. the u.s. had such a ban from 1994 until it expired in 2004. with just days to go until the recommendations are presented to the president, biden says coming up with solutions to this national problem isn't easy. >> we realize this requires

colorad they are looking -- outside of denver to was in the-aurora.... colorado. >> catherine: we may live in one of the wealthiest nations in the world. but not one of the healthiest. a new government report says that while americans pay much more for health care than people in western europe, canada, australia and japan. we also get sick more often -- suffer more injuries -- and die at a younger age. the report from the national research council outlines the ways that the u=s is number one. and they are not anything to cheer about. number one among developed nations in infant mortality and low birth weight. number one in teenage pregnancies. number one in teenagers with sexually transmitted diseases. adult americans are at or near the top in heart disease and lung disease. they are more likely to be overweight and/or suffer from diabetes. more likely to die from drug or alcohol abuse. more likely to die before the age of 50 from any cause. compared to europeans and
